G-RAID Enclosures: Latest G-Technology By HGST

Fresh from the recent BE Expo held in UK, HGST announced two new products they are developing with the use of the latest G-Technology. The Expo was aimed at highlighting the technology used on production and broadcast. The event was the ideal place for HGST to release their two latest product which is designed for productions concerning audio and video as well as photography. The G-RAID is the latest RAID enclosure which is completely removable and is equipped with dual hard drives that operates at 7200 rpm and is categorized as enterprise-class. The enclosure is all-aluminum and it comes with a built-in RAID controller and a fan used for cooling the device. Operators have options such as RAID 0 to select performance, RAID 1 is the access to redundancy and the JBOD is used when users need to access the drives separately.

The sequential throughput of the enclosure is set to reach 440 MB/s which are the widely used setting for production of video or photography. The enclosure may also be used when multi-streaming HD and 2K as well as workloads that are compressed 4K.

There are different versions of the G-RAID in the market such as one with a dual connection, the USB 3.0 and the Thunderbolt 2 rolled into one and another version that employs USB 3.0 solely. Both of these are given a limited time warranty which is three years only.

Aside from these developments, the HGST also expanded their Evolution Series which are storage devices meant for rugged use in field works. The Evolution Series covers various products such as the G-DRIVE ev ATC equipped with USB 3.0, the G-DRIVE ATC that equipped with Thunderbolt and the G-DRIVE ev RaW. All of the mentioned drives are designed with a compartment that is watertight and in case of water submersion, it will float. Other features include resistance to shock and two-meter drop sustenance.

The external market for these rugged devices is quite competitive due to the latest release of the SSD manufacturers of the external SSDs with storage of 1 TB. These external SSDS are small, light, fast and shock resistant.
